Big winners and busy times ahead

By Karen Stephens Nov 2026

Winner of Bill Jones Memorial Trophy, Ari Donaldson.

It’s been a very hectic couple of months at the club with some of our flagship competitions and events.

Early October saw the Martinborough Men’s Classic, where players could choose to compete over either 54 or 36 holes. More than 70 players took part, representing clubs from across the region. Unfortunately, the weather hadn’t been advised it needed to behave, so Saturday’s rounds were challenging with plenty of rain and wind. Of course, the sun came out just as everyone finished the afternoon round! Sunday was much kinder and, given the conditions, there were some very respectable scores.

Mens Classic 54 / 36 hole tournament. From L-R Doug Clark, Jack Clout, George Ngaronga, Perry Hayman.

The 54-hole gross title went to Perry Hayman (Judgeford) on 222, with clubmate Joshua Cumpstone second on 230. George Ngaronga (Titahi Bay) won best nett with 212, ahead of our own Josh Hawkins on 229.

In the 36-hole competition, Jack Clout (Boulcott Farm) claimed best gross with 153, while Martinborough’s Doug Clark took out best nett with 139. Many thanks to sponsors Power Farming and Martinborough Transport.

Hot on the heels of the Men’s Classic was the Martinborough Junior Open, which this year formed part of the Wellington Golf Futures Programme. It was a fabulous day, with players of all ages and skill levels travelling from clubs around the region.

Thanks to generous prize donations from the Martinborough Volunteer Fire Brigade and FENZ, we were able to give away a putter worth $500, rangefinders and other great goodies. Yumin Shin (Paraparaumu Beach) won best gross with 73, local player Ari Donaldson took out best nett and the Bill Jones Memorial Trophy with an amazing 59, and Brody Ward (Carterton) won best stableford with 46 points.

A big thank you to everyone who chipped in (pun totally intended) with donations of time, effort and support to make the day such a success.

The annual Lamb and Chardonnay Ambrose, sponsored by Colombo Wines, attracted a full field of more than 130 golfers. Played on a pearler of a spring day, teams battled it out for the chance to take home generous lamb cuts from Elworthy Farms and some excellent Colombo Martinborough chardonnay. Those prizes remain one of the secrets to making golf popular at home!

Our huge thanks go to all the volunteers and staff who sold sandwiches and beers, created the draw, worked out results and looked after our players throughout the day. Winner, winner, lamb for dinner went to Josh Hawkins, Harsha Dias, Daniel Hawkins and Debbie Banks with a nett 55.75.

Coming up, the 36-hole Mixed Foursomes will be held on 7 November, while Twilight Golf returns on 13 November. Buy a drink or menu item and you’ll go into the draw for a weekly putt to win $500. Miss it and the prize jackpots by $50 each week until it is won.
