Ata Rangi’s taste of the old Toast Martinborough

Nov 2026

Martinborough’s wine and food story is getting a nostalgic twist this month, with Ata Rangi hosting Sitting Pretty, a pre-Toast sunset session celebrating the winery’s place in the early days of Toast Martinborough.

Taking place on Friday 13 November, which is the evening before Toast Martinborough being held at The Runholder, Sitting Pretty offers a relaxed way for visitors to ease into festival weekend, while giving locals a chance to enjoy a special evening among the vines.

In collaboration with Rose & Smith, Ata Rangi will bring back favourite dishes from Ruth Pretty’s menus of years gone by, including whitebait fritters, asparagus with hollandaise and long-stemmed chocolate-dipped strawberries. Food will be served on proper plates, with linen napkins and cutlery, and Ata Rangi wines enjoyed at an unhurried pace.

Ata Rangi Cellar Door and Events Manager Ness Paton says the winery’s history with the festival makes it the perfect opportunity to revisit a special chapter in the wineries’ history.

“Toast holds some great memories for us, and we thought it would be fun to relive some of those early days through some of the dishes and traditions that made them special. Ruth and Paul Pretty will be joining us and are looking forward to seeing their dishes being recreated,” says Ness.

With live music from Pat For President, Ata Rangi wines and a relaxed vineyard setting, Sitting Pretty is designed as a complementary start to Toast Martinborough, and a good excuse to settle in, catch up with friends and enjoy the simple pleasure of good food and wine.

Sitting pretty on Friday, 13 November, 4pm to 8pm, at Ata Rangi, 14 Puruatanga Road. Free entry, but RSVP to visit@atarangi.co.nz
