South Wairarapa’s historically significant Carkeek Observatory now has a new protective structure to protect its remains
for future generations.
The Council worked with Iwi, stakeholders and descendants of Stephen Carkeek to have the remains of Carkeek Observatory heritage listed and to build a structure to reduce further damage from the elements in future. The structure has been designed with architects and has been installed by local contractors. Though there are no immediate plans for tourism (as the structure is on a working farm), it has been designed with future tourism in mind as it has relevance to the Dark Sky status for the area.
Scheduled completion is by the end of September.
