Four Years of Connection, Collaboration and Community
Four years ago, the Martinborough Business Women’s Network began with a simple observation of local businesswomen having nowhere to regularly gather to network and share ideas or find support close to home. While establishing the Wellington and Wairarapa branch of ICIB Brokerweb Founder Sheryl Rooderkirk recognised that many women – herself included – were building or growing businesses in isolation. A relaxed, welcoming space for connection was missing, so Sheryl created one. What started as a small group around a table has grown into a dynamic community of 175 women who back each other personally and professionally.
The network’s appeal lies in its authenticity. There’s no hard sell, no hierarchy, no pressure to perform. Women come as they are – whether they’re running established operations, launching startups, freelancing from home, or simply exploring new ideas. The atmosphere is warm, inclusive, and refreshingly uncompetitive. Real friendships form, collaborations spark, and women return because they feel genuinely supported. That sense of belonging is the engine behind the group’s growth.

A major strength is the sheer diversity of businesses represented. South Wairarapa’s economy is a colourful mix: vineyards, hospitality, accommodation, retail, creatives, consultants, wellness practitioners, trades, agriculture, tourism, technology, education and more. Bringing these women together creates cross-industry conversations that wouldn’t happen otherwise. A vineyard owner might swap insights with a designer; a retailer might find guidance from an accountant; a startup founder might meet a mentor who’s walked the same path. This blend of perspectives strengthens not only the network but the wider business community.
A great example of this collaborative energy was the recent business showcase at SmartHub NZ, a collaborative co-working space in the heart of Martinborough. The event welcomed both members and local women who hadn’t yet joined, giving business owners the chance to present their products and services, make new connections, and raise their profile. The enthusiasm in the room made one thing clear: women want opportunities to promote their work and support one another.
Looking ahead, the network’s vision is more mentoring, leadership development, skills sharing, collaborative events, community partnerships, and initiatives for emerging female leaders. The mission remains simple and powerful: ensuring every woman in business across South Wairarapa feels connected, supported, and confident in her ability to succeed.
