The whole country celebrated Ryan Fox’s first major win at The Open held at Royal Birkdale golf course in England.
But what is special about it for Martinborough Golf Club is that Ryan’s first professional win was at the 2012 Martinborough ProAm where he won a staggering $1,800! A little shy of the $5m he picked up along with the claret jug for The Open. This adds to an increasing list of world-renown golfers with association to Martinborough – Sir Bob Charles has played at our ProAm and Daniel Hillier (who also played in The Open this year and made the cut) was the Under 16 Junior Open winner also in 2012 (obviously a special year). We wonder which of our current crop of juniors will be next to hit the big time!
Talking of juniors, the Term 3 Junior Skills programme for 6-9 years and 10-18 years started on Sunday 2nd August. If you haven’t registered contact the office to secure a spot. During the next school holidays, we will have lessons and the Martinborough Junior Open on Friday 9th October so keep an eye open for more information.
We might not have the claret jug in the trophy cabinet, but the ladies added to the Rew & McCracken cup victory by becoming joint winners of the Riverside Cup along with Eketahuna. They won their match 5 to 1 against Riversdale and by doing this they brought the points up to level with Eketahuna. Well done to all who played in the Riverside Cup Teams over this season.
The extremely successful Grapes and Giggles introductory lessons for ladies are back for Season 2 starting on Friday 14th August with lessons available weekly on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. There will also be a “new to golf” Ambrose tournament on Sunday 27th September. Contact the office for more information or to register for the lessons.
The course is still recovering from the rain events over the last few weeks and as well as a few ‘lakes and rivers’ appearing several trees succumbed to the rain and wind. As a result the 12th hole was closed for a few days while they were felled and others made safe. While we love our trees, we must be constantly aware of the health and safety risk they pose, and their management is a high priority.
Sunday roasts continue to be a hit with members and guests; remember you can become a non-playing member of the club which entitles you to enjoy the great menu offerings and specials.
