Our Martinborough School Matariki visit to Hau Ariki Marae was a memorable and meaningful day for everyone involved.
The day began in a gentle drizzle with a pōwhiri, the traditional Māori welcome, as we welcomed our young manuhiri onto the marae. We were privileged to hear a beautiful karanga, calling our visitors onto the marae, and our manuhiri speaker, Nat from Kuranui College, responded on behalf of the visitors.

Following the speeches, our children proudly shared one of their favourite waiata, Ngā Ara. Morning tea followed, along with beautiful waiata performed by the Kuranui students, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed.
The Kuranui students then took over, teaching our tamariki the actions to Ka Poipoia, the waiata we will be performing at our Kapa Haka Festival later this year. The students were outstanding – patient, encouraging, and operating at the next level. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent with us.
Lunch was another highlight, with the children enjoying delicious soup that they had helped make themselves the day before. As part of our Matariki learning, our junior students made the delicious vegetable soup where they peeled, chopped, stirred and worked as a team to create a warm and tasty meal. A huge thank you to all our whānau who sent along a vegetable to enable a wonderful hands-on experience that taught cooperation, sharing, and the importance of contributing to a community – which is what Matariki is all about.
