South Wairarapa Libraries had a huge spike in engagement during Māori Language Week (Te Wiki o te reo Māori) in September this year with nearly three times the number of visitors to its Facebook page over the week.
“We had a fantastic result for the videos on South Wairarapa Libraries Facebook page with nearly 3,500 views during Māori Language Week. We would usually get 1,200 views each week for our posts whereas the Te Wiki staff videos were well above our usual engagement, ” says Libraries’ Te Ao Māori Specialist, Ali Te Pohe.
Māori Language Week celebrated its 51st year and to mark the second half century, library staff across the district launched of a new (free) te reo games kete which can be taken out for three weeks, just like a library book.
“The new te reo games kete includes different kēmu kāri (card games), magnetic dress-up figures, a te reo Bingo game and tipu board game. Each kete contains a mix and they’re free to borrow,”
“Library staff made videos to showcase our new games kete and practise our te reo. They were a lot of fun to make and really boosted staff confidence in speaking te reo.”
