Built to last

Oct 2026

Hurupi Stream Bridge has firmer foundations following repair work in response to damage caused during storms in February this year.

Floodwaters during the storm damaged part of the bridge’s approach, temporarily cutting off Cape Palliser, Ngāwi and neighbouring communities from the rest of the district. Emergency crews responded quickly to restore access and reconnect residents, businesses and visitors.

The finished recovery work is now stronger than ever thanks to the use of the HEX-LOC® erosion-control system, formerly known as EcoReef. This system has reinforced and stabilised the bridge’s approach to better withstand future flood events, reduce the risk of erosion and improve the long-term resilience of this vital transport link. The Council thanks the community for its patience while repairs were carried out by contractors Fulton Hogan.
