Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrades begin

Aug 2026

South Wairarapa District Council has signed a contract with Filtec Limited for the delivery of upgrades at Martinborough, Greytown and Featherston wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). All three wastewater treatment plants need biological nutrient upgrades to address resource consent compliance.

Mayor Fran Wilde says that this is an important step towards Council’s commitment to improving water management and infrastructure and enabling sustainable growth.

“Our Long-Term Plan 2025/34 prioritises significant upgrades to these wastewater treatment plants. We’ve worked closely with Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) to determine achievable and technically proven enhancements to improve performance”.

The upgrades are essential for the sustainable growth aspirations of South Wairarapa communities. The project is scheduled for completion within the 2027/28 financial year, which means that project completion will be under the banner of Waitī Waters, Wairarapa–Tararua’s new regional water services organisation.
