Wairarapa locals are encouraged to ‘get merry’ for this year’s New Zealand Festival of Christmas, with the much-loved winter event returning to Greytown from 27 June to 25 July. While Greytown plays host, the month-long festival is a win for communities across South Wairarapa, drawing thousands of visitors who stay, dine, shop and explore.
The festival shines a spotlight on everything Wairarapa has to offer in winter, a traditionally quieter period for local businesses.
This year’s theme, A Very Country Christmas, celebrates a festive programme packed full of classic Kiwi charm from glowing light displays and cosy bonfires to markets, workshops and family-friendly events. Festival highlights include the Big Switch Opening Night in Greytown, the Illumination Night Walk at Cobblestones, and the new Festive Night Glow at Molewood Orchard, where hot air balloons and bonfires create a magical mid-winter experience. Snowfall on Main Street and a lively Grand Finale with fireworks round out the programme.
Event manager Rachael Fletcher says the festival is designed to be enjoyed by locals and visitors. “This is a celebration for the whole region. It’s a chance for locals to get out during winter and enjoy all the festive experiences.” She says the festival plays an important role in supporting local businesses during the quieter winter months. “We see people making a weekend of it, booking accommodation, visiting neighbouring towns, and exploring more of Wairarapa. That flow-on effect is hugely valuable for the region.”
So, plan ahead, gather friends and whānau, and make the most of the winter programme.
