Plunket

December 10, 2012 December 2012 No Comments

As I sit in the sun reading through my copy of the November STAR, it strikes me that although we live in a small community, we live in a community that is caring and passionate about a lot of things.  We rally around when ‘locals’ need a hand, for example with the ‘Ears for Emily’ campaign, fund raising is required to help with the gift of hearing for little Emily to help secure her future in the hearing world with her cochlear implants, and so the goal of raising a daunting $50,000 is firmly on target to succeed.

One of our own voluntary firemen is on a challenging road to recovery after a serious assault, and within 24 hours collection buckets were quietly positioned in local businesses and people have been very generous with their money, time and support to help Peter Fisher and his family. Peter has always been very generous with his time with the Voluntary Fire Brigade over the years.

As a community we clearly ‘get on’ and do things as situations present themselves. Our local school, play centre and sports fields have every day people who give their time freely to help make Martinborough a great place to live.

During the last 4 years I have been fortunate to make some great friendships while living here and being involved with our very own local Plunket committee.

We’re a small group and meet up once a month for a committee meeting and we eat cake – usually chocolate with raspberries and cream… we wouldn’t dream of sending them home with it untouched for fear of being offensive. We have great coffee and tea and dream up some fun ideas for fund raising. This year we managed to raise over $6,000 for Plunket Martinborough.
Our small committee is dwindling though and so will are pleading for some new faces to come and join us. Our next scheduled meeting will be in Feb. 2013, so if you are a young Mum please don’t be afraid to come and join in. Also look in the Jan 2013 issue of the STAR for news of our Plunket coffee morning launch dates as we’ll start the New Year with a summer teddy bears picnic at the Plunket rooms. See you there.
