No need to be lonely

March 14, 2012 March 2012 No Comments

With many new residents moving to the South Wairarapa from bigger centres there has been a cry for social contacts. Within the area they have chosen to live. There are a number of organisations which cater for the senior population. For initial advice as to what and where one may be able be part of one phone WOOS (Wairarapa organisation for Elderly persons) phone (06) 377 0066.
Within my limited knowledge there are many organisations within the South Wairarapa which are only too happy to welcome new members.
There are several Probus Groups that are very popular with meetings, bus outings, Dining, garden tours etc. There are bowling Clubs, indoor and outdoor. Wharekaka at Martinborough offers a variety of entertainment, board games, films etc., as well as being residential.
In Martinborough I have an interest in the Womens Institute which offers social contact by a mature group of friendly welcoming ladies. The meetings offer guest speakers, raffles for funds for projects, monthly competitions fro home making skills, flowers from their gardens, friendship, fun and a tasty afternoon tea.
Meetings are held in the Fire Station Social Room on the 1st Thursday of each month from 1. 30pm. New members are always welcome to this world wide organisation. . Contact Nolene White 3069 567 or Betty Finlayson 3069 390.
The Presbyterian Ladies have various groups that any person is welcome to join . The contact is Barbara Evans 3069 527. The Anglican ladies also have a group with the focus on senior folk. Contact the parish office 3069 451.
The Martinborough Friendship Club is non religious, non political and aimed at any folk men or women. The club meets in the Presbyterian Church Hall Weld Street on the last Monday of each month at 11.45am to enjoy home made soup , a sweet slice and tea of coffee. There is either a guest speaker or entertainment and a good chat with old and new residents. Also visits to gardens , eating out and any other venture the committee can come up with are arranged (home by 2.30).
This group has been providing a community service since 1989. Contacts: convenor Connie Taylor 3069 587 or Nolene White 3069 567.
There is no need to feel lonely, as the television says “you just have to keep looking” So enjoy the local folks company – we welcome one and all.
