Martinborough Golf Club

There are a few things that have stood out in my mind during the month of August; a few visitors to the course and one club in particular opened their email bookings on a Friday for the following weekend and was closed within 25 minutes full.

We had the left and rights tournament which was spoiled by rain during the afternoon round and then being called off. The president of the Lefties Association Richard Davison who hails from Rangiora attended as well as Don Buchanan a life member from Taumarunui. One of the highlights of the tournament for me was a ‘leftie’ playing a hook shot on the Par 3 #8 hole; it cleared the high trees by the green keeper’s shed and ended up on the 9th tee. He ended with a four which was really quite extraordinary.

The 9 holers don’t have many tournaments but whoever called off the 9 holers Open Day should be shot. They could have waited until the day had dawned as three rather disappointed ladies from Miramar turned up to play.

I am very impressed with the juniors and their attitude to the club champs. They have caused a few upsets already and at the time of writing this I have just heard that Graham Jacobson has beaten Lance Phelps on the 19th hole; it must have been a jolly good match.

During the month I went to MAD CAPS and apart from being an excellent show one of the highlights for me was seeing the Grumpy’s CEO Terry Blacktop in a “yellow polka dot bikini”. His legs are in pretty good shape for a guy of his age.

The 18 hole women have not played many Wednesdays due to the weather but their spirits are as high as ever; summer is coming ladies ….or so I’ve been told.

Thursday Club is going from strength to strength with 43 turning up to play last Thursday. Doug Clark, Bill Crook, Roger Parkinson have been in the limelight of late. Bill has also been to a few tournaments recently and has met with some moderate success.

There are still vacancies for the men’s 72 hole tournament in October and only nine team spots remaining for the Lamb and Chardonnay Ambrose on the last day of September.

My member of the month is the Club President, Sherry Weatherstone who is a really lovely person. Not only is she a popular member of the Club Sherry is one the club’s top women golfers. A keen gardener you will often see Sherry attending to the gardens spread around the course and behind the 8th green. Nothing is too much trouble for Sherry and from time to time you will also see her in the office greeting the many visitors to the club.

Good Golfing & Good Luck Kevin Campbell
