Martinborough Squash Club celebrated its most recent champions last month with the Ladies Division 3 Interclub Team taking out their competition.
The team beat Red Star of Masterton 4-0 in the final winning 12 games to 1 over the 4 matches. “It was a fantastic result for our small rural club,” said Club Secretary and team member, Trinity Shaw. “This is the first time a few of us have ever played Interclub so we were surprised to be doing so well throughout the season, but to win was just amazing.”
The Ladies Division 3 Interclub Competition featured 9 teams from all over the Wellington region and included individual players graded from C2 down to E2. Trinity commented that “our team didn’t necessarily have the highest graded players but we were all pretty close in ability and had a great team spirit – making the win a real team effort”.
The win is indicative of a small rural club going from strength to strength. “The ladies victory in the Winter Interclub shows how much more participation there is at the club,” says Trinity. “Ladies Night on Mondays are really busy with regular coaching; and the Junior Club is thriving with 64 entries in our Club Champs a couple of weeks ago. We also now have three teams in the Wellington Spring Interclub Competition running from late September through to early November which is just fantastic for the Club.
Trinity also asked that we added the club’s thanks to The Shoe Clinic for their sponsorship, but we couldn’t support that kind of blatant advertising, could we?
