US Correspondent Addie Miller talks Pie with long time local Tony Belshaw.
Tony Belshaw is like a palette of paints, each story another colour and texture. From intrigue to espionage to helpful hints on frugal living Tony’s life is a remarkable canvas.
Originally from England Tony came to New Zealand at the young age of 22. He settled in Wellington, married a Kiwi woman, had 3 children, and worked for GM as an engineer until he relocated to Martinborough over 27 years ago.
On my first visit with Tony I was quizzed on the true American pie, of course I got it wrong when I was handed a big homegrown pumpkin instead of a bag of apples; immediately I felt at home. Tony’s interests vary and coupled with a photographic memory he is a fountain of knowledge.
In between tidbits from his life, recited rhymes, and general chitchat it is clear that Tony is an avid gardener, bee keeper, historian, and story teller.
Tony used to do a lot of hitchhiking and walking but these days he’s on public transport with his gold card.
If you run into any problems with composting, need tips on self-sufficiency, or want a good steamed pudding recipe you may find him on the bus to Masterton. Well, I know the saying goes as American as apple pie, but after baking up Tony’s pumpkin, I must admit from this American’s point of view there is nothing quite like a slice of Pumpkin Pie. Thanks Tony!
