Jazz Donates $6,000

October 10, 2011 October 2011 No Comments

The Jazz in Martinborough Festival held in August to raise funds for the Christchurch Jazz School raised $6,000.
“We couldn’t be much happier than that,” says festival co-ordinator Ian Cresswell. “It is just amazing how much support a small town like Martinborough can give to earthquake stricken Christchurch.”
Ian presented the cheque when in Christchurch recently.
“What a great and pleasant surprise it was to be presented with a cheque for $6000!” says Tom Rainey, Head of the School of Performing Arts at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT). “CPIT Jazz School has indeed been the very fortunate beneficiary of Martinborough’s enterprise and generosity!”
“We are most grateful for your wonderful idea to mount a Jazz festival, using our students and graduates as performers, and contributing towards their well-being. And our students had a ball!” he adds.
Other tributes have come in too, including feedback from Saturday night’s Dixie Street Jazz Band leader Rod Andrew who says “Thank you for making our visit to Martinborough and our concert at the Town Hall such a wonderful event. What a most wonderful experience. Really excellent musicians, venues and atmosphere.” He thought the venue was superb and that the audience really engaged with the band to make it all the more special.
And he was taken with our town too, saying “What a lovely town Martinborough is. We were all gob smacked! Wherever we went around town there were warm greetings.”
The donation of $6,000 to the Jazz School was possible because Jazz in Martinborough were able to keep costs to a minimum “because of the tremendous support of the local community,” says one of the other co-ordinators Lee Quayle.
