GOLF CLUB NEWS

The season is well and truly underway and the real golf has begun after one of the hottest summers I have experienced for a very long time. The course is in great order thanks to Darren and Mark who have toiled to keep the greens in tip top order.
 
The ladies played pennants one Monday against Royal Wellington. They do have to be congratulated for the amount of work they do in preparing for one of these events and Martinborough won.

The Grumpy’s continue to thrive every Tuesday with steady numbers. Terry Blacktop does a pretty good job looking after them. Ali Holmes played off the wrong handicap recently and blamed the computer and then his playing partner all over one point. Leftie Ray Lind has won the comp two weeks in a row and George Marshall who has been sidelined for a few weeks with a leg injury has returned to the game and was the only one who had to pay for a jug which is now up to 32.
 
The ladies numbers are steady both 9 hole and 18 hole. Carol Parkinson absolutely blitzed the field in the Aotearoa Cup with a Nett 62. Jill Baker won the Vets and Bindy McLeod won the Coronation Medal. Honor Clark is also playing extra well at the moment and figures in the winners list quite often.

Thursday club numbers just keep on climbing; 58 one week, 47 the next.  I guess none of them have anything to do on the farm so they might as well go to golf.
 
The shoot out for 2013 has commenced and so far the most notable round was by Ian Stewart with a Nett 60. After his round he rang the radio, TV1, TV3 and the ‘Crowd Goes Wild’ letting them know what a wonderful golfer he was (note was). Still, there are plenty of rounds to be played yet.
 
The first round of the Captain’s Trophy has also been played with some unexpected surprises as they go into the second round. The weekend players are starting to get serious too; Chris Rendle is having a purple patch at the moment and Colin Whibley-Smith is also having a good run.
 
The junior pennants team has had successes at Castlepoint and Carterton and are at the top of their competition and let’s not forget the Junior Open which is scheduled for Friday, 26 April.
 
Bill Jago rang Ali Holmes after a Marquis Shield round and asked for results; he must have put on a great voice as Ali didn’t have a clue who it was.
 
Carol Hawkins, Trevor’s wife informed me recently that whilst in Auckland she caught up with Brian Moisley ex Club Captain, President and now the Patron of the Club. Apparently health issues had prevented him from attending a family reunion recently but he seemed alert and in good spirits and was pleased to hear from Carol. Brian is one of the nicest officials the Club has ever had.
 
Lastly, entries are still being taken for the St John Charity Tournament on Friday, 12 April.
