From the Mayor

Labour weekend has always been eagerly awaited by many; the last long weekend being a distant memory way back in June. Whether it be spring cleaning, getting the tomato plants in or a welcome weekend away, there is never a shortage of things to do.

This Labour weekend I had overseas guests to entertain and no visit to the Wairarapa would be complete without a trip to the coast. It’s easy to take our rugged shoreline for granted with its raw beauty and wonderful views. We just accept its accessibility as our right as we know no different.

Our visitors were amazed by the shoreline, enchanted with Ngawi and the bulldozers and simply blown away by the friendliness of everyone they met. They commented that people pay hundreds of dollars in other countries to do what we had just done for free.
This reminded me of just what an important visitor attraction our coast is and that we must work hard to keep it that way. This includes all of us taking our rubbish home not dumping it, treating the coastal environment with care and respecting private property. If we all do our bit then hopefully our impact will be minimal on this very special part of the Wairarapa.
