Friendship Club
The March meeting of the Friendship club had some interesting songs etc. for their theme ‘Sing, Say of Pay’. The ‘Pay’ wasn’t an issue as the club isn’t here to make money, only friends.
A senior lady told how in the 1920s she purchased a motor bike, not only to go to work but for competitive riding against her male counterparts. It was a brave thing in those times.
We had ‘Mary had a little lamb’, fun readings and a song about ‘Poor little Albert that was eaten by a lion’ and how bad it had been especially for the family which had to pay to get in. It was all great fun and better still for those who chose to take part as joining in the theme was voluntary.
April is a soup kitchen theme with the suggestion that everybody dress down to wear an apron and head scarf. The day’s format will be a bit different with everybody lining up for soup and buns then washing their own dishes and getting their own tea and biscuits.
The speaker for the day will describe life during the 1930s depression., This is no way a celebration but rather to bring to mind the hardships during that time.
It is encouraging to have the people coming to the meetings as we need to keep the numbers up to help the club pay its way. We desperately need help from any able bodied persons in setting up the tables as the committee are now elderly and have been making the service available for over twenty years.
These committee ladies include one at 91, one at 86, three at 80, and I am 88. We provide the food etc. and organise the meetings – something for the community to look forward to each month.
There are no joining fees, only $3 for lunch and good company. See you there: the Presbyterian Church Hall mid-day on the last Monday of the month.
