As we come to the end of a very busy year it is easy to see improvements locally that have occurred. I think the Considine Park committee under the leadership of Heather Gibbs have won first prize. The Park and surrounding area has been transformed with the committee working bees and Martinborough Lions members helping out too. It is looking attractive and there is an ongoing Management Programme which will see some more new fencing and planting in the New Year.

The Martinborough Playground has also had a freshen up and hopefully it won’t be too long before the “Traveller” (flying fox) is installed. This is a well used area and Jo Guscott has given this a big push with the Community Board.

The Martinborough Pools are under new management and the new cover for the main pool will make all the difference in retaining the water temperature.  A spruce up in all areas around the pool will make this a more enjoyable outing for the summer holidays.  Adi and Max have been harping on for a while to get this sorted.

We will also be seeing some new public loos built after the summer silly season and the plan is to do some landscaping that will include the VJ memorial roses being transplanted from the Square gardens to become a special feature in that area.

Rurally we are seeing our roads maintained and repaired regularly and remember anyone can phone into Council if you think your road needs some attention or your local Recycling Depot needs a clean up.  The Coastal areas will be expecting campers and holiday makers out there again and Council will be employing the services of a Ranger to visit these areas daily to keep an eye on things.

A big thank you to Shirley and the team at the Library for working in less than ideal conditions while we sort out a new location for them.

Politically we are all moving into a new scenario with all three Wairarapa Councils agreeing to propose the formation of a Wairarapa Unitary Council rather than go for the Wellington Super City option.  Not one person I have talked to have wanted to go with the Wellington Super City and Lord Mayor option – so interesting. I am sure we will hear more from you over the consultation period.

Good luck with the Xmas Parade and best wishes everyone for the festive
Julie Riddell
