Community Board Notes

August 3, 2012 August 2012, Regular Features No Comments

Doesn’t Centennial Park look great? Our thanks to Ian Richards from Council and Graham Peek who was contracted by Council to erect the fence, complete the path and generally tidy up the area. Signage is being prepared and will be attached to the post beside the limed track and there are some trees to be planted when the weather allows.

Is there anyone out there with the time and expertise who would be prepared to prune the olive trees along the walkway? Powerco have requested that they be allowed to fell the gum trees along Princess Street in Considine Park as they are becoming entangled in the power wires causing a potential hazard. This work will take place as soon as weather permits.

The Community Board has received some good submissions from the school community regarding development of the pool, particularly heating to allow swimming lessons over an extended summer period. A leak in the main pool is being investigated and funds have been put aside to finance a new and improved cover.

However, it is disappointing that no one from the wider community has come forward and offered to take up the challenge of further improving this area, for example, reforming the Swimming Club that went into recession several years ago or offering to undertake life saving training. It is this kind of community involvement that allows our facilities to continue to function and warrant further development.

Thanks to all who are organising events to celebrate the Centennial of the Town Hall. MADCAPS have a show organised for mid August, the Jazz Festival will run over the last weekend of August/beginning of September and a lunch is to be held to commemorate the laying of the foundation stone on 17 September 1917. A ball is also planned for late September.
