2012 presents our elected parliamentary members some problems for which time is running , or has run, out. They really have to be addressed. Climate change and the economy are at the forefront with such things as water allocation, productivity, reduction in violence and fairer distribution of wealth with less ultra highs and lows not far behind.

Discussion on any of these subjects usually brings the comment “if only our politicians used a bit of common sense”. Indeed, there is a grain of truth in this – who could be against common sense? However one person’s common sense is another’s suicidal madness. Common sense is much like beauty – in the eye of the beholder. Martinborough’s first street lamps on bronze green posts were installed in 1907 with Mr Bill Smith being appointed the lamp lighter in 1908. However in the interim the Town Board had receive correspondence on problems with he proposed Acetylene Gas lighting and decided that ‘it was not advisable to proceed’.

Two years later the Town Board changed its mind and the go ahead was given. Then only to be confronted by a dispute between the Lamp Lighter and the Night Watchman, Mr Arthur Dohnt who put them out. George Stanley Sharp – the story of a family doctor

Here is a book which is a particularly relevant addition to South Wairarapa’s recorded history. Dr, Sharp was the area’s doctor for forty years. In 1925 he bought Featherston doctor, Dr Doctor’s, practice then in 1930 added Dr Hugh Webb’s Martinborough practice to his commitments.
