Congratulations to Walter Barber, Caleb and Reece Everson, George Wilkins and Piri Wihone who won the Junior Pennants Inter-club final last Sunday at Wainuiomata by 12 points. It is a very special trophy for the club as it is the first time entered. There are a few people to thank namely Peter Wilkins the driver for the boys and Gary McDowall at the Pukemanu for allowing the boys to use the courtesy van for transport and Bill Jones who has given so much time and effort in preparing the boys for each round. … Continue Reading

Lioness Club Combines Service with Socialising

June 11, 2013 June 2013 Comments Off on Lioness Club Combines Service with Socialising

Are you aware that Martinborough is home to a Lioness club? Community service clubs such as Lions and Rotary are well known in most parts of New Zealand, and Martinborough is no exception. Lionesses are less well known but also put a great deal into your community and would love to welcome new members to the Martinborough Club.

At each Martinborough Fair the Lionesses run their busy café stall offering food to all those eager fair-goers, and by doing so raising funds that are then put back into the community throughout the year. They cater for events such as the Charity Cycle Ride, birthday parties, and various other private functions. Lionesses have assisted with a variety of events held in the Martinborough Town Hall, including Madcaps performances. … Continue Reading

Jazz in Martinborough
Just three months to go, as I write this, before the 3rd Martinborough Jazz Festival, JIM 2013, kicks off.   The 4-day festival, 29 Aug-1 Sept, begins as it did last year, with a cabaret/restaurant style evening at the Village Cafe on Thursday 29 August with the The Kevin Clark Quintet .  Our town will again come alive with jazz!  We’re aiming to have jazz or jazz-style music in every cafe, bar and hall or church.   Dancing in the streets!

District Mayor Adrienne Staples will formally open the festival in the Hall on the Friday night with Women in Jazz  and it will wind up on the Sunday afternoon with Rodger Fox Wellington Jazz Orchestra .  That’s the first day of Spring, so come and jam at the JIM!

Offers of help from locals are coming in as well as generous cash donations, all gratefully received.   And it looks as though our increased involvement of young musicians this year will attract increased outside sponsorship.   The 1st JIM festival made $6,000 for ‘quake stricken young jazz in Christchurch.  The 2nd one produced $10,000 for Martinborough Town Hall improvements.  We’ll be working to see that this 3rd  Festival can help our 100 year old Hall even more.
