Bravery award for Clay McCarthy

Clay McCarthy who grew up in Martinborough has been awarded a Royal Humane Society Award for Bravery.

As a member of the Auckland police Clay was involved in the pursuit of an offender who fled from a crime scene. The chase followed along a bank where the offender lost his footing and fell three metres down into deep water.

Well this cold weather has got everyone hunkered down under blankets here at Wharekaka.  It’s become quite a challenge to entice the residents out of their warm rooms.

Martinborough Playcentre extends a warm welcome to all to its free Open Day on Tuesday 31st July to showcase its facilities for babies and preschoolers. The Open Day will provide an opportunity for families new to the area or families who want to find out more about Playcentre to explore our facilities and see what Playcentre can offer their children.

Playcentre sessions run from 9am -12pm. The children have a shared morning tea at 10am. Pop in to see us anytime or for just an hour during the Open Day to see what it’s all about.

As near as we can get to the shortest day, First Church, held their Monster Book Sale on the 15th, 16th and 17th June in the Town Hall.  It was a fabulous weekend, kicked off with our guest speaker, well known Wairarapa identity, Gareth Winter. Gareth talked about the Wairarapa Archives and the work they do and also the books that he has published. One of the most well known is Street Wise, the history of how the streets in Martinborough, Featherston, Greytown and Carterton got their names.
