The final lecture of the 2012 series at the Medici Cafe will be held this month. The speaker will be Gaylene Preston, film maker whose subject is Adventures with the New Zealand Film Industry.
Having studied for three years at the Illam School of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury Gaylene travelled to England in 1967 and produced her first films while working with psychiatric patients using art and drama in therapy.

We hope you like your new look Star.
It is an immutable fact that any business or organisation can not just mark time, it must constantly refresh itself and move forward – or slide backwards. It is not difficult to think of once household name companies or public organisations which fell into this trap and are no longer with us.
We are aware that this also applies to the Star, we could slip into a ‘same ole same ole’ format, appreciated but gradually becoming boring, taken for granted and eventually not even relevant. Rather like an elderly great aunt – still loved but no longer heeded.
So, when Jazz, our valued layout artist, decided it was time for a well earned break and with Mike and Lindie putting their hands up to fill the position it was clearly an ideal time to give the format a bit of a brush up.
Fortunately visual design is Mike and Lindie’s business. They have come with many ideas, some of which have evolved into the paper you are now reading.
Personally I love it, and hope you do too. I hope you pulled the Star from your box thinking “here’s the good old Star” then on seeing it thought “Wow! look at this.”
For this is the idea, we want the Star to always be a visually fresh, providing a good mix of bright, positive, interesting, locally oriented reading.
All our readers out there have an important part in achieving this. Please send in you news, let’s have your opinions and ideas, share your club’s latest happenings.
Providing the town with a forum was one of the reasons that the Star was started. The other was to support the town’s businesses by providing an affordable advertising platform.
Martinborough is extremely fortunate in still having such retail services as supermarket, hardware, drapery, toys, stationary butchery, hairdresser, garages available in town. These along with banks, accountants and lawyers are no longer available in most towns of Martinborough’s size. Appreciate them, support their services so that they remain viable and are retained.
In a nub Star’s message is ‘give us your news items and shop locally’

This book, plucked from the shelf on the strength of its quirky cover, turned out to be a gem. The author spent her teenage years in a small village in East Sussex. She graduated from the London School of Economics and then worked to become an executive in a travel advertising company. Twenty years later, after attending a writer’s course, she had several short stories published. Major Pettigrew is her first novel.
