Well, well, well the season is over and this is my last report. The club champs have been played for and won and there is a changing of the guard at the top so we look forward to the New Year and hope we have the same following as 2012.
A huge thank you to the Club’s sponsors who have supported and contributed in various ways throughout the year – Pain & Kershaw, Scotty’s Meats, Trust House Masterton, Martinborough Transport, Pukemanu Tavern, All Teed Up, Peter Hudson Wines, Medici, Wairarapa Building Society, Provincial Insurance, Property Brokers Martinborough and lastly Bill Crook aka ‘Bill the Builder’.
The Grumpy’s have had a great year under the guidance of Terry Blacktop and the jug count continues to rise. For those of you who don’t know; a jug-shot is awarded when a player does not reach the ladies tee with their drive.
The women were plagued by inclement weather for the year but they still got through the programme on time.
Thursday club just gets bigger and bigger with 46 playing recently. There has been some great scoring as well with 51 points being scored by Patrick Pedlow last week which is something you don’t see very often. They have a trip to Ngawi coming up so no doubt there will be some stories to tell when they return. Doug Clark does an excellent job with the Thursday Club now.
It is only appropriate to mention the loss of George Webby during the year who also gave so much of his time and energy to the Thursday Club. The club also paid tributes to Chris Griffiths, Tom Jaspers, John Ogilvy and Franz Marwitz who all passed away during the year.
The juniors under the guidance of Bill Jones have been a real asset to the club and I believe we have another couple of future champions keen to learn the game of golf.
Some tournament numbers were down and I do believe that this is a trend all over the country so hopefully we have better turn-outs next year.
To green keeper Darren O’Dwyer and his part-time mate Mark Green, thanks for keeping the course in a beautiful and tip top condition throughout the year. I often wonder how you do it at times but the compliments keep on coming in.
Finally there are two members who do things above the call of duty. They are Ian Henderson and Secretary Manager Sue Berger. Ian has a great knowledge of the game and his input into the rules and its interpretations as well as keeping the handicaps in order; thank you Ian. Thanks so much Sue for what you have taught me in keeping the club in good shape and it is. Her friendly face and smile counts towards the many groups coming back time after time.
Sue also has the pleasure of putting my scribble into the papers too. – Thanks for writing these reports to keep readers informed at what is happening at the Club.
