As I sit in the sun reading through my copy of the November STAR, it strikes me that although we live in a small community, we live in a community that is caring and passionate about a lot of things.  We rally around when ‘locals’ need a hand, for example with the ‘Ears for Emily’ campaign, fund raising is required to help with the gift of hearing for little Emily to help secure her future in the hearing world with her cochlear implants, and so the goal of raising a daunting $50,000 is firmly on target to succeed.  … Continue Reading

Martinborough Womens institute

December 10, 2012 December 2012 Comments Off on Martinborough Womens institute

Although the membership of the Martinborough Womens Institute is only twelve it never ceases to amaze the efforts put into their meetings. The previous meeting was a mini flower show among members which Mr Mate Higginson, as always, happy to oblige by judging.

Elizabeth tries her hand at feeding Olivia’s lamb

City meets country happened when 27 students, who are deaf, came from Wellington and from other parts of the Wairarapa to attend the Pet Day at Kahutara School. Thank you all for making us so welcome and giving us our own exhibition table and certificates.

The highlight for most students was to be able to pat lambs and calves, and some students even got to give a bottle  of milk to a lamb for the first time! This was a day to remember and also a great opportunity for our students, who are all mainstreamed in different schools, to get together. Well done Kahutara School!
