Wairarapa residents and ratepayers are facing one of the most important decisions they will have to make in a very long time, regarding the future of our district.  We have to decide on how we want our local council structured if we want one at all, who will make the decisions on what we look like and who pays for it.

We cannot delay this decision as Greater Wellington Regional Council have signalled they will be putting a proposal to the Local Government Commission in the New Year and this will trigger the process for us whether we like it or not.  GWRC have signalled they favour a Super-City model which includes Wairarapa, although this has not been formally ratified by their Council and this view is not unanimous amongst their councillors.  … Continue Reading

Ideas please
Calling all Martinborough Folk … I have found myself on the group that is working on the redevelopment/refurbishment of the town hall – we are reassessing the town hall vision and would love to get any ideas/comments/feedback about the town hall etc that might help with this so we can work towards a community led design. Please email me or call with any ideas/thoughts/suggestions about the town hall and environs.
 – thanks so much,
Vicky (Victoria Read)

Those doggy poos
As a concerned citizen I would like to bring the council’s attention to the state of our footpaths. I do some walking now and appalled at the amount of dog poo around.

I think that it is pretty poor when there is a law against this type of behaviour on our streets. Aren’t the owners of dogs required to pick up their poos?

On a different topic, what would be the chance of Martinborough, citizens, group, council erecting a logo showing off our wares?

Eketahuna has a Kiwi, Ohakune a carrot, Hawera a giant cow. Surely a bunch of grapes or a wine bottle displayed would be a great way of showing off our heritage

Know your town

Dick Harris standing in doorway of his shop. Saddles, bridles and covers were displayed outside, no footpath in those days.

In the 1980s Charles D Harris had a number of shops built on Otaraia Road (now Jellicoe Street). The saddler’s for his son Abraham (known and Dick) who had one leg shorter than the other due to contracting Polio as a child. He had one boot built up to counteract this.

Later the business was run by H Stannard then later again by Alf Wilton. The shop then became a boot repair shop run by John Charles then passing to Les Drake then again to T Malton. Going home from school we would stop and listen to the stories told by three or four elderly gents who spent their time sitting on a seat outside in the afternoon sun smoking their pipes and telling tales. … Continue Reading
