Martinborough Golf Club news

54 Grumpy’s which included their wives and partners, had their night out recently. To qualify to become a Grumpy you must be over the age of 60 although Matt Thomas clearly does not qualify. A great night and the meal which was cooked by Tracey was superb and apparently there are still some jugs left over for the next bash.
The 9 holers have had better weather this month and their numbers are still up. Jill Colton is doing a great job. Like the 9 holers the 18 holers have also had better weather of late and Women’s club captain Mary is also doing an excellent job. The results I get every week are brilliant.
On a sad note, George Webby, a very colourful and vibrant club member and one of the leading organisers of the Thursday Club for many years died recently. No doubt George will be missed by many.
Saturday and Sunday comps have been pretty well supported and two of the clubs main trophies have been played for and won. The Captain’s Trophy which is singles match play was won by one of the club’s younger members; Walter Barber (pictured) who at 14 years old and one of Bill Jones prodigy’s beat some of his more fancied opponents.
The Martin Fourball which is pair’s match play was won by green keeper Darren O’Dwyer and butcher Scott Reid. The plate was won by Shane Hartnell and Alastair Boyne. But I guess the highlight of the month would have to be the members only mid winter 12 3 best ball tournament; an unbelievable 22 teams of four took part this year. The weather was perfect and the new concept was well received. To Bill Crook, Lachie McLeod and Sue Berger; well done, it surely was a day to remember.
The Juniors are coming along very nicely and Friday, 6 July is earmarked for the club’s Junior Open Tournament.
My member of the month is 94 years old. June Hume, what a person; she has only stopped playing golf about two years ago. In 2005 she was made a life member of the club and won the women’s vets trophy. In 1972 June and husband Guy donated the Ngahau Trophy (named after their farm) for Committee members, life members and workers at the Club. Her daughter Jane, who is married to Dr Terpstra is also a very keen golfer. June still drives and her independence is just great.
There is no better use of time than playing the course well – no greater waste of time than playing it badly.
Good Golfing & Good Luck
