Library News
Libraries are more than just books, they let loose the imagination and let you travel to other places and times, to experience the impossible and to change the way you think about things. Bear Grylls can take you in the jungle and show you how to survive for days on end with just grubs and moose saliva to live on, or you can really feel how difficult it is for someone who stutters to get through life.
Reading and immersing yourself in others experiences opens your mind and heart to empathise with people and perhaps not to judge so quickly. As was once said – walking a mile in someone else’s shoes gives you good idea of their life from personal experience and if you can do that from your own armchair by way of a book, even better – less smell from the shoes too.
Enough philosophising – I wanted to tell all those HUNTERS out there, that we have lots and lots of hunting books, magazines and even DVDs. I have even scoured bookshops looking for HUNTING books for kids – and they are few and far between believe me.
I have recently updated the HUNTING collection and bought every NZ book published in the last 2 years which we didn’t already have. Here’s hoping some of you hunters out there that didn’t think it was worth coming into the library will now pop in to see what we have.
I managed to get to see ‘Big’ Al Lester at the Yarns in Barns recently and the tales he told of his hunting adventures were awesome and yes, we do have his books. We have been getting NZ HUNTER magazine monthly at Martinborough Library for some time now and it costs nothing to take it out.
For those not interested in hunting, Martinborough Library have added some lovely new magazines to the collection recently: NZ On Film, Art News, Horse & Pony, Urbis, NZ House & Garden, Life & Leisure and Country Home Ideas among others.
We are always willing to look at adding to the collection so don’t hesitate to offer any suggestions. This is also true for books, if you have seen something you want to read in a bookshop then ask us – I am always happy to look at buying on customer recommendations. This is YOUR library – come and use it.
