Election signs
An application by the National Party to erect an election sign on a public reserve provided a subject the Council had not had to previously consider. While signs on public land were not generally allowed in this case there were no other suitable sites in respect to the southern entrance to Featherston – and hence the electorate.
The Council’s Reserves and Roading Manager, Ian Richards was not concerned with such a placement of a sign so long as it was positioned at least six metres from the reserve entrance. Such a placement would not adversely affect traffic safety or conceal the entrance site distances.
Council officers recommended that approval is extended to all political parties to ensure that the Council is see to be acting fairly and consistently. All signs must comply with height and size bylaws which include that they should not be erected prior to eight weeks before election date. It would appear that the National Party jumped the gun by a few days in the latter respect.
