Cricket Champions

Cricket-champions The Martinborough Cricket team who won the Southern division of the
Country schools Kiwi Cricket tournament, which was held at Martinborough school on March 22. The tournament consisted of 4 teams, Martinborough, Gladstone, Kahutara and
Greytown.
It was a round robin tournament where each team played each other
once. Every player had to bat for 2 eight ball overs and bowl 2 overs, each
wide and no ball bowled gave the batting team 2 runs, if you were ‘out’, 3
runs were subtracted from your run total, (and you stayed in to bat out your 2 overs).
First up Martinborough played Kahutara, with some fine batting and fielding we won by over 40 runs. Next up was Gladstone who had a big first up win over Greytown. We batted first and put on a good score. We knew our fielding would be crucial to restrict the big hitters. After some great bowling and sensational catching by Martinborough, Gladstone only ended up with one run, (due to 3 runs being deducted for each out).
After a short lunch break Martinborough played Greytown. Again excellent fielding by Martinborough and some sensational 6’s with the bat saw the team home with a big win.
A big thanks to Sammy Curtis of Sport Wairarapa for organising the
tournament, it is fantastic to see the kids enjoying cricket, and a great
way to introduce the game to those that don’t play it as a summer sport and haven’t played before.
