Lucky Month at P & K

Peter Purvis being congratulated by Weekend Manager Bev Elliot.

Lotto history was made in Martinborough in September when two major prize winning tickets were sold at Pain and Kershaw in the same draw.
Officials at the Lotteries Commission rated the chances of this happening at around once in 100,000 years! Even worldwide this may be unique, especially for such a small outlet.

A local couple won $2.9 million with their own number combination. As well, Peter Purvis bought the lucky ‘spinning wheel’ ticket that is selected from the serial numbers at the bottom of tickets. Spinning the wheel on national television (at the end of October) will result in a minimum booty of $25,000 and a maximum of one million dollars.

And no, there is no windfall to the lotto outlet owner with big winners apart from publicity about being a ‘lucky’ store.

The lucky first division + powerball winners are a local couple that bought one of two winning tickets after choosing their own numbers for only four weeks. Surprisingly, one had won over $200,000 in Lotto many years before but now older and wiser, is determined not to ‘blow the lot’ like last time. They have several grown up children between them and so far both have continued their jobs as a fencer and vineyard worker.

At first the couple tried to keep the win a secret but gave up and celebrated by shouting friends generously at the Pukemanu Tavern. They also shouted morning tea for P & K staff, the first winners ever to do so.

Two prizes in the Four Square Birthday competition (lower Nth Island) came to Pain and Kershaw. Barbara Nichol was one of 100 lucky winners but Aloela Davies won the first prize of $6,000 worth of travel vouchers. She got the phone call as she was wondering how she was going to afford to carry out her Aunt’s dying wish, which was to have her ashes scattered in Scotland.
