Moki

A rather long winter is now behind us and it’s time for all you surf casters to dust off your gear and get some fresh sea air in your lungs. As an extra inducement to getting started there is an early season surf casting competition virtually right on your doorstep.
The competition will be held on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November with the fishing boundaries between Whangaimoana and Stone Wall Creek with each competitor being allowed to use two reels. The top prize up for grabs will be $1,000 for the biggest Moki – with 2nd and 3rd Moki prizes.

Experts say that the best bait for Moki is Mussel, Tuatua, or crab, Crayfish and prawn parts. (Mussel and prawns are available at the supermarket). Keep the bait quite small so that the fish will take it whole.
Moki feed quite close to the shore, 10 – 25 metres out, just behind the wave dump onto the beach.

While Moki are the fish being particularly targeted there will also be three prizes each for both Blue cod and Kahawai along with $250 each for the top lady and top junior surf casters. All up there will be $2,500 worth of prizes.

Entries ($20) will be registered at the Ngawi hall between 11am and 1.30 pm on the Saturday. The weigh in will be between 8.30 and 10 am on the Sunday.
