GOLF CLUB NEWS
Goodness me, that’s October gone. It has been a pretty good month for the club; not only has the champs been played and won there has also been three successful tournaments.
There has been many groups come through to play and the group from Mornington were unbelievable. Club champs are the same titleholders as last year; Lisa Marie Ireland and Jason van Zanten and Honor Clark is the new 9 Hole Champion.
The Grumpy’s were devastated with the sudden death of Franz Marwitz on the course recently, a likeable fellow and only a member for such a short time.
The Thursday club is holding its own with numbers of between 30 and 40 when the weather is good. The same old names keep popping up like Roger Parkinson, Doug Clark, Bill Jago, Griff Page, Malcolm Wood, Ash Reed (when he is not shanking) Bill Crook and Ailsa Griffiths to name just a few and weekend golfers have also been steady in numbers.
Recently the club held their annual Eagles Day; Cathy Ward won the ladies with 30 stableford points while young Reece Everson won it for the men with 42 stableford points as well as nearest the pin. Terry Blacktop and Walter Barber both had 40 points; Ian Henderson, Bill Jones and John Taylor all finished their round with 39 points while Malcolm Wood and Ash Reed ended their round with 38 points. The day proved successful for the Eagles and a great cause.
Recently while in Queenstown I was shown around Millbrook Golf Course; what a place! They have completed an extra nine holes which are truly magnificent.
Coming up at the club in November is another two rounds to qualify for the shoot out final; Toast Martinborough tournament on 17 November and then it’s into December with the members only Xmas Cheer and closing day on the 1st and the Xmas Open on Saturday, the 8th.
Two members of the club who I consider deserving recognition are Terry Blacktop and Bill Jones who both contribute so much to the club. Terry, an ex-banker has all the attributes to assist not only for his financial and auditing skills but he’s the main man to organise the comps for the Grumpy’s on Tuesdays. Bill Jones deserves a medal for his devotion to the junior members of the Club. He has taught them the rules and how to play, but most importantly, golf etiquette both on and off the course.
Good Golfing & Good Luck Kevin Campbell
