U3A December meeting

Nov 2026

Our October talk was by art historian and photography curator David Langman, former Director of the New Zealand Centre for Photography.

We looked at a collection of photographs by Kiwi photographer John Fields, documenting many aspects of New Zealand life from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. The images showed people at work and play, seemingly mundane observations marked by astonishing composition and detail, reflecting Fields’ extraordinary darkroom skills. What an exploration of 20th century New Zealand history.

We had a full house and a very appreciative audience. We hope David will return next year to explore another iconic New Zealand photographer.

December Meeting – Canada, the US, and the Destruction of a Relationship

Tuesday 1 December, 10:00am – 11:30am, Heartlands, everyone welcome

This month we have Martin Harvey, who will draw on his experience as a New Zealand trade negotiator and his four years as New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Canada. Martin Harvey will discuss the relationship between Canada and the United States – often described as one of the closest relationships in the world between two countries – the frameworks and interactions that govern it, and the wholesale attack launched on it by President Donald Trump and his Administration since Trump’s re-election in 2024. He will describe how Canada has responded and the prospects for Canada maintaining stability and prosperity in the face of ongoing US challenges.
