MVFB Monthly Update

Oct 2026

New Fire Fighter Nadia Lamnao being presented her Yellow Helmet by CFO John Crighton.

There were 15 callouts in September at the time of writing, with more likely by month’s end. These included medical responses, smoke alarm activations, vegetation fires and motor vehicle accidents.

As we head towards what’s predicted to be a warm, dry summer  it’s a good reminder to stay vigilant and prepared. Some communities are still recovering from recent wild weather, and next month’s article will focus on preparing for the dry season ahead.

Our Brigade members continue to polish their skills so they can respond to the needs of our community. We also have cause to celebrate. Congratulations to our newest Fire Fighter, Nadia Lamnao, who has completed the seven-day Volunteer Recruits Fire Fighting Course at the National Training Centre in Rotorua.

Further congratulations to Kath Ching, Chloe Webb and Corina Lawson, who recently completed their Emergency Response Drivers training — including runway driving at Ohakea Air Base. They are now qualified (or requalified) to drive our Medical First Response ute under lights and sirens. Well done to all.

Our medical response vehicle.

Two of our firefighters also took part in the 9/11 25th Annual Sky Tower climb to commemorate the tragic event. Congrats to John and Corina for completing the climb.

A timely reminder about emergency lights and sirens: all three of our vehicles are fitted with them, and Fire and Emergency New Zealand has strict guidelines for their use. If you see red and white flashing lights or hear a siren behind you, NZ road rules require you to pull over and let the vehicle pass. Unfortunately, there have been instances where our responding vehicle has been overtaken by members of the public — clearly their emergency felt more important. Humour aside, your cooperation helps us get to people who may urgently need us. It might even be you.

We’re a busy little station and always on the lookout for more volunteers. There are a range of roles: Breathing Apparatus operational firefighter, Operations Support, Medical First Responder, or behind-the-scenes support such as Health and Safety or Finance. If any of these interest you, please get in touch. We train on Tuesday nights — pop in, say hi, and we’ll show you around.

Stay safe everyone!
