Walking is one of the most accessible forms of recreation and provides a low-cost opportunity for people to meet others and participate in their community.

The Wairarapa Walking Festival is a 10-day program that showcases walking opportunities in the Wairarapa from 6–15 November 2026.

Now entering its sixth year, the festival has developed into a distinctive regional event which uses walking to connect people with the landscape, communities, stories, culture, food, heritage and natural environment of the Wairarapa.

The 2026 programme offers a broad range of walking experiences, from gentle urban and family walks through to longer and more adventurous walks. The festival caters for different ages, fitness levels and interests, making walking accessible to a much wider audience.

The festival covers walks in Featherston with the heritage Carkeek observatory, Martinborough ambling along the famed Terrace, Lake Ferry to Whangaimoana Photo Walk, Greytown’s is also for younger walkers on the Let’s Go Chatterbox walk, Carterton’s Nordic walking at twilight, and Masterton’s Pukaha after dark.
