“We thought it would be significant to celebrate our 60 years supporting the community by planting a special tree in commemoration,” says Lions Immediate Past President (IPP) Max Stevens. “And when the big oak in the Square got blown over around New Year it provided both a space and an opportunity.”
Earlier this year the Martinborough Lions Club celebrated their 60th Jubilee with a gala ball. As part of that celebration there was always a clear intention to plant a commemorative tree somewhere around town. “The council was happy for us to plant a tree and gave us direction about which type of tree to plant,” adds Max. “And when the gap appeared in the square, where to plant became obvious. We just had to wait for the right conditions for planting.”

It was particularly poignant for Max to be involved in this event as his father R W (Bob) Stevens was a Charter member of the original Lions Club 60 years ago.
