Well, let’s keep our fingers crossed that the worst of the winter weather is behind us and the course can dry out and be conducive to enjoyable golf!
Having to put up with the muddy course were the players in the annual Martin 4BBB (four ball best ball), the field was whittled down to the final two pairs, Tony Taylor and Brian Russo and John Warner and Barry Hayman. Tony and Brian were the victors – well done to both and all the players who braved the elements over the last couple of months.
It’s going to be a busy few months, on and off the course. The Men’s Classic will be held over three days starting 2nd October. Three events will take place, a warm-up event on Friday 2nd, then players choose to play 54 holes consisting of 36 holes on Saturday and then 18 holes on Sunday. Alternatively, they can play just 36 holes, 18 holes each on Saturday and Sunday. Historically this event has attracted players from all over the region and early registrations indicate that will be the case again. The dinner on Saturday night is sure to be a great social get together.
Hot on the heels of the Men’s Classic we focus on our juniors with a school holiday programme ending in the Martinborough Junior Open to be held on Friday 9th October. This event is now part of the Wellington Futures Golf Programme, a collaborative network of golf clubs offering playing opportunities for young people aged 5–18. A very exciting addition to the junior open and we look forward to welcoming young golfers from around the Wellington region to Martinborough. The competition is open to all ages and there will be 9- and 18-hole competitions. For the 18-hole players must have a current golf handicap but not required for the 9-hole event. A range of trophies to be won as well as some great prizes donated by our fabulous Rural Fire Volunteers and FENZ (Fire and Emergency NZ).
