Hau Ariki Marae has long been a unique part of the Martinborough community, a place where people come together to learn, celebrate, support one another and build connections across generations.
In recent years it has welcomed school groups, community organisations, visitors, wānanga, conferences and cultural events. Weekly waiata gatherings continue to grow, while local tamariki are building connections that will help carry the kaupapa of Hau Ariki forward. Investments in solar and water systems have strengthened the marae’s ability to support the community during emergencies.
While buildings and projects matter, the true strength of Hau Ariki lies in its people and the spirit of manaakitanga that brings them together. As three trustees prepare to step down after two terms, the marae is entering a new chapter. An independent governance review found strong foundations, a clear vision and exciting opportunities ahead, with a need to grow participation, develop new leaders and share responsibility more widely.
Greg Hawkins is standing for Chair at the upcoming AGM, continuing a family connection through his father, George Hawkins, remembered as a driving force behind the marae’s development a generation ago. The vision remains unchanged; a place where te reo Māori, tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori can flourish; a place of wellbeing, belonging and connection for Māori and nonMāori alike; and a place that serves future generations.
We are seeking community members interested in becoming trustees, committee members, volunteers or supporters. There are many ways to contribute, including governance, finance, administration, communications, community engagement, fundraising, resilience planning, maintenance and future papakāinga development.
