Bill Fetch Tertiary Bursaries and Rotary Initiatives

July 2026

Bill Fetch, one of the founding figures behind the Martinborough Fair, envisioned that proceeds from the event would support South Wairarapa students who might otherwise be unable to pursue tertiary education. In keeping with this vision, South Wairarapa Rotary now offers two bursaries of $6,000 each. Students from Kuranui College and Te Kura can apply from July in the year prior to their first year of tertiary study, with applications submitted through their school by the end of September.

Rotary also supports the Innovative Young Minds programme, a five-day residential STEMM camp for Year 11 and 12 girls across the wider Wellington region. Held at Silverstream Retreat, the camp brings together 40 students for hands-on science and technology experiences, visits to leading organisations, and inspiring talks from women in STEMM. The programme focuses on building confidence, expanding horizons, and fostering meaningful connections. South Wairarapa Rotary has sponsored three students from Kuranui College to attend.

In July, Rotarians will once again play an important role in the Greytown Festival of Christmas, volunteering as event Ambassadors. Easily recognised in hi-vis vests, they will welcome visitors, provide directions, and help ensure the smooth running of events. Rotary volunteers will also assist at the Cobblestones Illumination events, contributing to the festive atmosphere. Together, these efforts reflect Rotary’s strong commitment to supporting and enriching the local community.
