Puawānanga Wairarapa Young Parents Unit. Tuesday 2 June. 10.00 – 11.30. N.B. Supper Room, Wahinga Centre
Prue Harawira-Smith, Manager of Puawānanga Wairarapa Young Parents Unit in Masterton will be with us to tell us about this fantastic education facility for teen parents and expectant mothers aged 19 and under. Puawānanga, on the grounds of Makoura College in Masterton has been doing wonderful work since it opened in February 2002. With a roll of around 30 students, this warm and caring unit exists for a simple but vital reason – to make sure teen parents and expectant mothers aged 19 and under 39 don’t have to give up on their education.
Open every school day from 9am to 3pm, the unit offers each student an individual learning plan set at their own level and pace, alongside essential life skills. And the practical support is impressive: transport is provided, WINZ sometimes covers course and childcare costs, and right there in the same building is the Mākoura Early Learning Centre, so young parents can study knowing their little ones are close by and well looked after.
Come to the June U3A meeting to find out more.
Everyone Welcome.
