Light in the Darkness News from St Andrew’s

By Sarah Harvey May 2026

Like so many of you, I attended the poignant ANZAC day dawn service in Martinborough Square.

As the dawn began to glow and the trees darkened their silhouette against the stars we heard about the sacrifice a young Martinborough man had made. He lived on Dublin Street and he died in France aged 23.  No doubt he had marvelled at the beauty of the sunrise on the Martinborough hills, just as I do today. Perhaps he also enjoyed the early morning solitude of a walk along Shooting Butts Road.

The memory of all those who served, died or returned injured or changed by the horrors of war, was described as light in our darkness.

In times of chaos and uncertainty it is easy for us to fall prey to apathy in the face of helplessness. What can I do? It’s all too mad and too complicated for me to comprehend, yet the weight of the world’s troubles affects us all, not just economically but spiritually too.

On Sunday June 21st at 6pm, St Andrew’s will be hosting an evening service offering space for reflection, prayer, contemplation and renewal of spirit. On our winter’s longest night, we will light candles and offer comfort and hope in the face of darkness that threatens to disrupt our sense of wellbeing. You are welcome to step out of your darkness (whatever that feels like for you) and join us.
