Over the last 8 weeks we have had over 70 women taking golf lessons from our club member Hugh Wilson. There has been great feedback from the ‘students’ and it has definitely encouraged them to take their game further. To this end we are opening up a new golf slot for purely social golf on Wednesday afternoons. “Nine and Wine” is aimed at those who are newer to golf, or just want to go do a few holes with others, without any competition, etc. All you have to do is turn up for a 2pm start, and we can help you into groups, if needed.
As well as encouraging new women into the game, in late May we have almost 130 women descending on our club and village for 3 days of golfing in our inaugural “Autumn on the Greens” event. We have scheduled time for them to go shopping, explore, and enjoy local hospitality. We’re giving each participant a retail “passport” to get stamped as they shop, and we’re encouraging local hospitality to put on special offerings. Our aim is for all of Martinborough to benefit and if you want to be part of it, let us know!
You may also have seen in late March an increased number of fire officers around town. FENZ have held their national golf championships at Martinborough. Our own Lisa Marie Ireland was one of the organisers and a competitor.
Anzac weekend will see the return of our Grand Day of Golf, sponsored by Greytown Orchard Retirement Village. The event features prizes for best grandparents, for Inter-generational pairs, and the Bill Jones trophy for anyone who can “shoot their age (or closest to it)” which is quite a feat! The golfing year is well and truly up and running with a number of competitions being held as well as the usual weekly ones. Our pennants and interclub teams are also travelling around representing Martinborough in various cups and divisions. Good luck and thanks to all the players.
