The fertility and abundance of autumn produce was celebrated in a Harvest Festival at St Andrew’s on Sunday 22nd March.
Venerable May Croft led a service of thanks for the wine, soil, bread, eggs, milk, olive oil, fruit and vegetables and flowers, all of which had been grown locally and brought to church. Corn sheaves decorated the church and sacks of locally grown potatoes spilled into the aisle.
All of these locally grown and produced items will be donated to the Social Crust. They will be given out as part of the weekly boxes of food provided to locals needing food security at this challenging time.
You can tell a lot about a community by the way it looks after its members in need. At St Andrew’s we remember the story of Jesus when he had a catering problem. He was asked to feed a crowd of his followers who had come a long way to hear him speak. Before the time of Hello Fresh or Uber Eats, Jesus relied on the generosity of a young boy who offered his lunch – five loaves of bread and some fish. In a miracle of abundance and sharing, everyone in the crowd was fed (and there were left overs). Jesus made sure that there was room at his table for everyone.
Social Crust provides weekly boxes of food and essentials for anyone in Martinborough or Greytown needing help to feed their family. Jesus asks us to use our resources (money, time, food, skills) in ways that allow everyone to “pull up a chair” and be part of our community. If you would like to learn about the faith stories that drive our way of life, come and visit us at St Andrew’s Dublin Street (2nd and 4th Sundays of the month), or check us out on Facebook.
