ParkRun: possibly the best free fun you can have on a Saturday morning

Apr 2026

There is no ParkRun in Martinborough! It’s time to become a ParkRun tourist!

ParkRun started when three mates in London’s Bushy Park were told to shed some pounds. They decided that a 5km walk, amble, jog, run every Saturday morning was very do-able. Others joined, and this brilliant concept spread worldwide – now thousands gather weekly in parks everywhere.

It’s gloriously addictive. Earn t-shirts for 50, 100, 200, or 250 runs, proudly worn every Saturday. When organizers ask, “any tourists today?” hands shoot up from across the globe. Some runners aim to complete the entire ParkRun alphabet!

Best part? It’s completely free. The only competition is with yourself: overtake someone ahead, defend your position, or chase a personal best. Some sprint like John Walker or Peter Snell, young’uns may think they are Sam Ruthe whilst others walk, jog,
chat with friends, or push prams – everyone does their own thing.

Want your time recorded? Simply register online for a barcode. Easy.

Two excellent ParkRuns near Martinborough await. Woodside rail trail (starting at Woodside station) offers flat terrain with stunning hill views outbound and Tararuas returning – perfect for PBs (personal best). Henley Lake, Masterton, might be the most beautiful I’ve experienced: riverside paths, bird-filled lake views, woodland trails – it’s absolutely stunning.  At present Greytown gets around 80 and Masterton 120 runners. Wellington around 500.

Many ParkRuns have a favourite café offering discounts to barcode-carrying runners wanting post-run coffee and nosh –the perfect finish.

It’s welcoming, friendly, non-threatening, and happens every Saturday at 8:00am throughout New Zealand.

Haven’t tried it? Why not give it a go?! Search ParkRun and it’ll tell you all about it and where your nearest is.
