Felicity Donaldson’s first solo exhibition at Aratoi is showing in the Forsyth Barr Windows Gallery.
The exhibition, called ‘Where the Light Gets In,’ references the Leonard Cohen song and is themed around grief and loss, the weirdness of it all: what we go through, where we look for signs and the light, the sky, and our ways of moving through the pain associated with it.
“Where the Light Gets In traces the quiet terrain of absence and remembrance, capturing the sense of otherness that lingers in the wake of loss,” Felicity says. “Through shifting light, changing skies, and layered mediums, the work seeks moments of meaning and connection, while those who are gone yet remain deeply present in the heart.”
This exhibition includes Felicity’s signature ceramic and glass work, but also silk paintings and light boxes. The main focus of the show highlights her stunning hand-built urns, each one completely different, some with a particular person in mind.
“I made an urn for a close friend’s child a few years ago,” Felicity says. “It was during lockdown and I was unable to travel internationally to be with them, so this ceramic vessel was all I could do to provide tangible reverence and solace; loss is something that we all go through and ultimately pottery outlasts us all”
Autumn Opening, Friday 6 March, from 5.30pm
