We’d like to say we wish everyone had a wonderful summer break but let’s get real, it’s been far from the hot dry summers of the past, not only in Martinborough, but across the country. Our thoughts have been with our colleagues predominantly in the North who have had to deal with some incredibly challenging weather events and the catastrophic implications that followed. The nature of the work that Fire and Emergency does, along with the human element can be confronting and lasting. We can only send out aroha and manaakitanga to those affected, the families and whanau of those that have faced some unthinkable situations and wish that the weather calms for us all.
2025 call numbers were a little misrepresented in the last Star (our mistake) so here we go with the correct numbers. Total calls were 224. The breakdown of these calls were 16 Vegetation Fires, 34 Miscellaneous, 6 Weather related, 10 Structure Fires, 1 Hazmat Incident, 11 Alarm Activations, 10 Motor Vehicle Incidences and 136 Medical Events attended predominantly by our First Response Unit.
2026 so far for our brigade has been relatively quiet. Due to the unseasonable rain the typical scrub fires of past years have been few and far between. We thank you all for vigilance in adhering to the Restricted Fire season that is currently in place, it certainly makes our role as volunteers easier. At the time of writing this our January call numbers sit at 17 with 2 Miscellaneous, 1 Structure Fire and 14 Medical incidences.
The year ahead for the brigade is looking exciting with 3 more new recruit fire fighters signing up and well into the throes of training with us.
The year ahead for the brigade is looking exciting with 3 more new recruit fire fighters signing up and well into the throes of training with us. We welcome to the brigade Sarah Pringle, Tim van den Kerkhof and Ricky Tannant who have all put in hours of training over the Christmas break to build their skills and knowledge before the wider brigade returns to normal training on February 3rd. This brings our new recruit numbers to 8 for the past 12 months! Exciting times!
If you’ve ever thought about joining us, now is the time. If you are driven, motivated to give back to your community, have a few spare hours in your day, we would love to have you join the team.
