This time last year was an interesting and challenging time for our brigade. Faced with some negative media attention it certainly seemed to cause divide amongst some in our community.
The media is a funny thing, we rely on it for information, yet that information can often be found to be grossly lacking in facts and horrendously sensationalised to get ‘a good story’. Fortunately, our story has a happy ending. Our brigade continues to be there for our community when the need arises. We are all volunteers, not one of us is paid to do what we do. We do it simply to give back to you.
In the past 12 months we survived through some of the worst weather we’ve ever seen in this community. Our Medical First Response Unit has responded to 1234 calls, which supports Wellington Free Ambulance crews, providing essential medical support in time critical situations. We’ve had shifts within the brigade with people leaving and new recruits coming on board. It’s been a busy time for us as volunteers.

They say there are four key elements of volunteerism: selflessness, sacrifice, service, and support. Volunteering isn’t just about giving up your time; it’s about putting other people first and making a difference in their lives. Our brigade is made up of a diverse range of volunteers from all walks of life. We are self-employed, teachers, farmers, students, Government employees, medical personnel to name just a few. We all have our own stories and bring with us different experiences. But here’s the thing we all have in common, a drive, a passion and a dedication to a service that not only supports the very community we live in but is the backbone of our emergency service in New Zealand.

So, as the year draws to a close and we reflect on the work that we do, we want to thank you, our community, for supporting us. It’s certainly not easy and at times it’s unforgiving but we continue to show up for you. We wish you, your families and whanau all a safe and happy Christmas.
